One-sitting read; a window into everyday life for a schoolboy in early-90s Angola.

3,5 ⭐ TW: Referência a violência e violação; Morte, Linguagem Explícita

i found this book sweet and emotional, and i really liked that it made me look up things & learn about Angola’s history. the innocence of Ndalu’s view on the world, on the reallty he lives was really beautifully written. I didn’t particularly liked the writing of the book in general, maybe because the translation felt unnatural, or because i don’t particularly like books narrated by children. the execution was really good, like the voice felt childish & innocent & realistic, with flawed understatement of reality and exaggerated reactions, but i didn’t personally enjoy it.
there was a comment that i felt uncomfortable with, about “being perceived as a guy that only wants to hang out with girls”, it felt homophobic and i didn’t like that, but other than that i think it was a good book, maybe one that i would’ve enjoyed in middle school or high school, and i’d recommended it for people able to read it in portuguese, or maybe spanish (bc it would be more similar to the og)

📖 Memorable excerpts and Notable Passages 📖

I can’t take a photograph of that inoffensive little monkey?”
“No, Aunt, you can’t . . .”
“And why not?”
“I don’t know if you’ll understand. . . .”
“Well, tell me,” she said, her voice serious.
“You can’t take photographs of that monkey. . . . for reasons of state security, Aunt,” I said, my voice serious.

“Your ration card. You have a ration card, right?” I asked her this figuring she was going to tell me the truth.
“I don’t have any sort of ration card. In Portugal we make our purchases without a card.”
“Without a card? But how do they keep track of people? How do they keep track, for example, of the fish you take home?”

“But why does this beach belong to the Soviets?” Now she seemed really startled.
“I don’t know, I really don’t know . . . It could be that we have a beach there in the Soviet Union that’s only for Angolans!”
