If you're a fan of Mortal Kombat, then this is most certainly a comic story for you. A champion from each ‘clan’ is chosen to fight it out at a tournament called ‘The Tribunal’, the winner of the battle gains control of the ‘Azure Sun’ which will grant the holder unimaginable power.

The character of Quin is your typical ‘doesn't want to be a hero’ type of hero. That doesn’t mean he isn't any good! There’s an instant connection made with Quin as we grow to realise that his clan, the clanless, are a downtrodden, have to fight to survive kind of people which makes for a true underdog story. A gifted fighter, Quin rushes to the tournament to protect what he holds dear as Hellfighter.

Jay Sandlin provides us with an expertly crafted story full of all the aspects you’d expect to see from a comic with Hellfighter in the title. There epic fights, decapitations, disfigurement, magic, betrayal and a little sprinkle of romance. Clearly distinguished character personalities and awesome one liners make sure a thrilling story that will have you picking favourite characters, wincing at painful blows and shocks throughout.

Atagun and Maria Santaolalla have created a beautifully crafted world which has clear differences in the environments and characters, the powerful have ornate armour and land, the clanless for example, seem very much like a mass of homeless people in derelict homes. The colours pop throughout the story and compliment the textured panels in the comic.

As a huge fan of the Mortal Kombat games and movies, I was extremely excited to read this. (Thank you Jay for describing it as such). Boy oh boy I wasn’t disappointed. This comic is outrageously fun with a superb fight for survival/underdog story that has a movie-esque ending that’ll leave you wanting more.
