As much as I try to escape the secondary school clutch that carol ann duffy had on me - I cannot, she is a queen icon slay

This is pure art, and I loved every single poem - though, as always, some drew me in more than others. But Duffy has such a clever way with words that they literally seem to grab you and hold you close. While some poems were very peaceful and serene, others were utterly heartbreaking.
I can't wait to read more of her work.

I have come to really enjoy this poet. Her poems are heavy - not necessarily in terms of tone - as in having substance and groundedness. I feel i will need to come back to these poems. Although they do not feel to me like the easiest poems to fall into - i found myself wanting to reread the words and peel back the layers.

I really enjoyed these poems. Really thoughtful and clearly laid out and accessible. They had a warmth and slowness about them - in a very positive way. Great insight and warmth - the 'Bee' theme was effective and added great value.
Have now ordered Duffy's 'Collected Poems" as a result of the experience.

It's so hard to review collections like this; inevitably, there were some poems I really liked and others that didn't affect me as much. So I think 3 stars is fair overall.
The theme of bees - not present in every poem but rather scattered throughout the book, sometimes with whole poems dedicated to them and other times making a sort of 'cameo' appearance - is what drew me to this book in the first place. There are some lovely lines such as:

For this,
let gardens grow, where beelines end,
sighing in roses, saffron blooms, buddleia;
where bees pray on their knees, sing, praise
in pear trees, plum trees; bees
are the batteries of orchards, gardens, guard them.
