This book could have taken place in any universe. Nothing about this book was tied to DC. It was just a bland mythology book that slanted mostly towards Norse. The book was extremely overwritten. It was tough to get through. None of the characters mattered and the writer, Kevin Grevioux, couldn't make readers care. The art was serviceable but nothing could save this bland read.
The story shows promise but it is missing the "What's next?" resolution. As a stand alone cross over story about the Amazons pre Diana, it is a very interesting take on the values of the sisterhood and their relationship with the Goddesses who created them. The cross over with Norse mythology was a cool twist of events but even that didn't save it from feeling like a combination of a coming of age story and a midlife crisis. It lends itself to a good philosophical discussion about the true reason behind the Amazon's existence. and their free will. Can they forge their own destiny and escape the trappings of being the God's playthings? Are they more than warriors and immortal peacekeepers? Can they be both?
If you are into reading all WW material, you will not want to skip it. If you are looking for more Diana Prince print, this is not it. Enjoy!

The bare bones of the story is great.
We get the Amazons traveling around the world and looking for more of their "sisters" while battling evil and being awesome. After one such battle, a group of young Amazons gets kidnapped by beings from the North and off we go to rescue them. Which leads to the Amazons meeting the Valkyries and travelling to Valhalla before one epic final battle takes place.
In theory, this should be awesome.
In reality, it gets bogged down by too many talking heads and a valiant yet unsuccessful attempt at epic poetry. Not to mention the provocative posing and the sexy, unrealistic armors.
The base is strong, but they messed up the execution.

So the Odyssey of the Amazons is what I've now gathered to be a reimagining of the Amazons' origin story. I say reimagining as I've seen a few reviews saying that the story has been completely changed. I guess I'd be a little annoyed too if I was entirely familiar with the original origins. Alas, I am not and I've got to say I wasn't expecting to love this as much as I did, even though it felt like a full on novel with how long it took me to get through.
I adored so many of the characters and got easily attached, so when people died it really affected me! I loved all the strong female characters and that it was led by a black female! That made me so happy. On top of that it was full of ethic diversity, as the main plot development was finding true Amazons' across the world and from there, the plot thickened and a blend of Greek and Norse mythology came into play. I think that was one of my favourite themes out of the whole story. It was handled so well.
Overall, a unique read. I loved the fresh take on the Amazons' tale and enjoyed the very slight hint to Wonderwoman and all the things she will (already has) do(ne).
Pick it up, give it a go and enjoy! >(^_^)<
