One of the scarier Goosebumps books. There's just something eerie about scarecrows.

I have a soft spot for scarecrows, so I enjoyed this one simply for that. Scarecrows and farm settings in horror are some of my favorite. I liked it overall, beyond the setting and scarecrows. It was a nice spooky Goosebumps story. What you'd expect from these books.

I, of course, question the character's decisions in the end, but it didn't frustrate me to the point of hating the story. I still find their decisions dumb though. So beware if you despise dumb characters. Though, I did feel for Jodie being allergic to everything. That was me at her age. Less so now, but I still get seasonal allergies.

Scarecrows scare the hell out of me, even the ones that look comical. There is just something sinister and creepy about them, standing in a big field full of crops. *shivers*

So yeah, I was looking forward to this book, and in a way I was not disappoint. It was at times really creepy and it gave me goosebumps, but at other times I was just annoyed with other things. Like the characters.

Stanley was so annoying. Seriously, one of the reasons to give this book -1.5 stars. If Stanley wasn't here I think it would have gotten a higher rating.
And that ending, seriously they didn't kick him out?
SpoilerSorry, but if I was a boss, and this was one of my workers, I would have fired him.
Stanley threatened people, hurt people, made them obey to their wishes. And what do they do? They keep him? Sorry, but I know he is mentally handicapped, but come on, no. Just no. Fire him. Don't give him back that book. Burn the book!!
Now I am sure he can just continue on and on with his stupid stuff and I am sure we will get a rewind of whatever happened again soon.

The whole joke with "You never know what Stanley will say" got old and boring after 3 times of hearing it, but sadly it continues throughout the book.

I didn't like Sticks, he was rude, mean and I felt like the book would have been better had he been left out.

I also didn't get the grandparents. They could have confined in someone, anyone to tell about the problems they have. But they didn't. They practically ruined the kids their vacation with how they acted.

But all in all it was a decent book, though I wouldn't recommend it.

Jodie and Mark go their grandparent's farm for summer, but things are different. Their grandparents seem tired and rundown. There are now 12 scarecrows instead of one. Groundskeeper Stanley keeps saying, "The scarecrow walks at midnight." Indeed, one night, Jodie is pretty sure she sees the scarecrows twitching, trying to get free from their poles.

Surprisingly unsatisfying Goosebumps offering. Yes, these are aimed at kids, but too much of this didn't make any logical sense whatsoever to me, and suffered as a result. I just found I couldn't get past it. It has the requisite short chapters with cliffhanger endings, but wastes far too much time with them. The plot plays with the is-it-scarecrows-or-someone-dressed-up-as-them scenario for too long, so we get no real idea of what they want or what they're capable of. As such, they never come across as scary or menacing. They show up, and then disappear, and it's just all a bit of a yawn. And the why behind it all and how it's resolved is just plain dumb.

SpoilerStanley read from a "superstition" book and brought the scarecrows to life. He sent them back to sleep on the proviso that the grandparents always keep him happy and do what he says (essentially blackmailing them) and that's why they're so tired. Why not fire his sorry ass? Then the scarecrows are defeated by being set on fire. Why did Stanley's son Sticks or the grandparents not think of that from the get-go? They're made of straw and shuffle slowly and awkwardly! It was too much for me to get past.

As usual, it caps off with an amusing coda, usually the highlight of these books. But a book about creepy scarecrows coming alive at night should have done far more with its concept than what is found here.

3.5 STARS!!

This is one of the ones I didn't get to read as a kid. I loved the TV episode and this was pretty close to the story line on the show, which I appreciated. This had its creepy moments but I also listened to the audio book and the narrators voice was annoying as hell haha but I still enjoyed the book. Good old cheesy 90s horror! :)
