Re-telling of a Grimm fairy tale. Interesting.

Hans is half boy, half hedgehog and when you mix in a little bit of fairy tale (including the kings and the issues that come with them) hilarity is sure to unfold! We had fun making predictions as to what was going to happen next with this one and the kids got a big kick (rolling on the floor laughing... literally) when all was revealed! Loved it!

I enjoyed this retelling, though never having read the original, I can't say how I feel about the changes Coombs made to the story. The text is simple and, though not short, still clear and engaging enough to be a good read-aloud. As for the illustrations, Nickle's style doesn't really appeal to me, but I still found his portrayal of Hans as hedgehog and the pigs rather charming.

Even though Coombs made it noticeably nicer than the original tale, it's still an odd story, and not one I would go out of my way to share with kids.
