Very weird one for this. Joe Abercrombie reddit mentioned this one a number of times to read. I am not drawn to Westerns and I was balking after a few hours and realizing the time constraint I was up against with the library due coming up. But after pushing through the initial expo of characters I came to relish the writing (yes, it is a bit dated in parts) and, most of all i appreciated the matter of fact of many character's end. Although centered around the love of a woman, the book is more bromance between the two protagonists. I'm still not sold on Western genre but this was a might fine read.

The violence took a vivid, disturbing, sadistic turn, with visual images I will never get out of my brain. I didn't care to stick around to see what else happened. (I looked it up. It only gets bleaker.)

It was painful to close this book at the end, knowing I was leaving a whole world behind. And all the cowboys I loved so much with it. Lorie and Newt, I’d give you anything and everything!

I had the distinct pleasure of getting to read this while in Texas and it was certainly a ride. I didn’t expect to like this as much as I did since I’m not really into westerns. The journey of this story though with its large cast of characters reminded me of a mundane Lord of the Rings in a way and the ending was incredibly powerful.

A big, sweeping and dramatic story of a cattle drive from Texas to Montana. As much as this is about cowboys and Texas Rangers, I would say that this book is really about relationships. I read this as part of a year-long read along. It is not my typical book but I am glad I read it.
