very sweet middle grade bio - a quick read with bold illustrations. basically, now I want to read a bio for adults about Josephine Baker with all the saucy bits this (age-appropriately) elides...

It's the biography of Josephine Baker's life. The information isn't anything you can't find online, but the art is very bold and engaging. It's a simple book, there are 't many words, and can be used to teach children about Josephine Baker as well.

Just look at this color palette! The narration! The style! The bibliography in the back! Powell and Robinson's artwork come together to make one of the best picturebook biographies I've seen in a long time. Filled to the brim with hope, inspiration, and joy, this book depicts the rise and fall of Josephine Baker, performer extraordinaire.
There are sections broken up to highlight the dynamic portions of her life, and let me just tell you that her entire life was dynamic. Inside are the harsh realities of racism and segregation, as well as colorism and sexism. But also inside are her experiences as a Red Cross aide and World War II spy. Who knew!
Overall, this was a fun and engaging book that will keep readers dancing in their seats, ready for more. Great for grades 3-5.

The vibrant illustrations and lyrical text really capture Josephine's exuberant spirit. While I am satisfied with the book as a whole, as a good informational book should, it also compels me to learn more.
