When 12-year-old Samuel‘s mother dies in a tragic accident, he is convinced he can find a way to bring her back. It all starts with a horrible summer storm and continues with an incredible journey for Sam.

Very readable, and the characters and story were likable enough. I'm a sucker for the small town/rural coming of age story. However, there were few surprises here. The story kept on as you suspected it would, nearly from page one, with no shifts or changes in the expected roles of each of these players and events. Kept waiting for some depth to emerge from the mythology story, or some further exploration of the potentially very interesting theme of the necessity of death in a damaged world. Missed opportunities there, but still kept me engaged.

Read this basically in one sitting - engrossing story and good writing. The descriptions of rural Pennsylvania (my home state) made my heart so happy. Hoping there's a sequel!

Lyrical and poetic. Like several other reviewers, I found the format confusing, but the story itself was intriguing. I love stories that take concepts we're familiar with and use them in unexpected ways - in this case, the Tree of Life.

Thanks to netgalley and rebellion for the chance to read it.

Wow!! This is an incredible story of good versus evil and how evil can be so appealing to us. Such a hard concept for us on earth to grasp, but death is really a gift.
