If you want to know who Cliff Hardy is than this collection of short stories is a good place to start. It shows you the life of a private investigator and that not all cases are complicated or are a success. But it shows that money, or the lack of it, is what motivates Cliff to get the job done, even if he dislikes the client. But than there is simple curiosity to make him go through to the end.

Well worth reading.
