I would love to give this book zero stars. I’m a huge horror fan and after seeing the great reviews and a friend recommending I check it out, I thought surely I was going to at least somewhat enjoy myself.
I did not.

I made it about a quarter of the way through this book before I realized there is no shame in giving up on a book. There’s too many good books in the world to suffer through a painfully horrible one.
This book consists of an unlikeable protagonist who is supposedly 13, but acts and speaks like a much younger girl. Every page has the word “monster” at least once but with no actual world building or lore that would interest anyone who does spend time reading horror novels.

The juvenile writing, plot, and conflict, weren’t captivating enough for me to care about finishing the book/finding out the mystery.

I knew it the moment I did not like the first 20% that I won’t like the end either.
I can’t really say what I did not like without spoiling the whole book but I can say that this was the worst sibling relationship Jennifer McMahon has ever written and I love her books because of these relationships.
But even if I don’t consider the siblings all the characters were poorly written, she writes better than this.
I knew the BIG PLOT TWIST from the start??? Like how? Either she did not write this book or she had a bad year when she was writing this.
I will read other books she publishes but I’m disappointed in this one.

Meh.
The dual storyline wasn't that great because I wasn't invested in the present day one.
I figured out one of the twists early on but the rest of it was just a let down when it was revealed. Overall just a very anticlimactic ending.
Also the hint of romance was weird.
