Somehow even better than the first! This sequel takes the beautiful world Shannon crafted in the first installment and builds on it. Certainly more of an atmospheric, heady read than The Bone Season. I loved learned more about the Seven Seals and the London they occupy, including complex syndicate politics and power dynamics.

I didn't really like this one as much as the other entries in the series when I first read the original text, but she really elevated her writing and pulled everything together in a much more cohesive way in this new edited version.

Really I just love this series in general - the worldbuilding is wonderful, the characters are fantastic, and this book in particular has a really twisty murder mystery that is a ton of fun to read.

My only main complaint about this book is that Paige and Arcturus are separated for a great chunk of it (my shipper heart just wants them to be together 24/7).

Second in a fantasy series about a clairvoyant mob syndicate in future dystopian London. This book somehow feels action-packed but still reads slower than molasses left out in a snowstorm. This book started so slow, the middle third is basically the same thing several times over, but the last 120 pages saves it. I still enjoy the magic system in this series with ambitious worldbuilding, but I wanted to get more attached to the characters than I did. I found like I enjoyed the development of several of the side characters, including the Seven Seals, more than I did the main character, Paige.
I still don’t understand the point of the romance subplot with Warden and it’s still a little weird, though less Stockholm-y/hot for teacher vibes than the last book. No surprise that Jaxon is a selfish, traitorous asshole, to the very last line.
