Meh. 2.5 stars, I guess? It wasn’t an awful read. It was quick, and the writing was decent. It wasn’t, however, scary. There were almost too many answers for it to be truly scary, if that makes sense...and they came far too early. It felt like a b horror film.

I was recommended this book on Amazon while I was looking at more Jeff Long books. It is kind of like Jeff Long’s Descent in the way that people go under ground and bad things happen.

I really thought this was just going to be a scary story about the catacombs. I imagined something like As Above So Below. The beginning was slow going, but my god the middle really dragged on. Once they were in the catacombs it took ages for anything exciting to happen. I wouldn’t call this a horror novel until the very end tbh, but it’s definitely a thriller. The last 30% of the book took a crazy left turn, and the last 15% or so had me clutching my kindle! I was stressed.

If the last part of the book didn’t happen I would be giving this one or two stars. I was honestly annoyed because I didn’t really read much about the book before so I wasn’t aware it was going to go in that direction and shift the tone so much. But I didn’t want to DNF already on book 2 of 2024 so I persevered. Am glad I did!

If you read the first book in this series, you've pretty much read this one, too, but with claustrophobia thrown in.

I liked the premise and ending, and I thought the story was easy to read (despite the many typos). My main complaint about The Catacombs is that, despite each chapter telling the story from a different character's perspective, the tone of the narrators never changed. We were told the story from the perspectives of people from various countries, cultures, ages, and genders, and one character was a literal psychopath, but the tone of the entire book stayed the exact same. The characters were static and unlikeable, but the last 100 pages I read in a day because I was excited to see how it ended. Overall, it was OK.
