This book, with its uplifting words and illustrations, will resonate with anyone who has left the barbershop feeling like they can rule the world.

A very darling book! Read aloud to my fourth grade students.

This book was definitely not written for a middle aged white woman but I absolutely loved it. Derrick Barnes captured the feeling of a new haircut so perfectly. I couldn’t help but grin ear to ear from cover to cover. Maybe it was written for me. I truly feel like I understand the power of a fresh cut to a brown or black man. “They’re going to have to wear shades when they look up to catch your shine.”

Okay y'all, there's a REASON why this has so many awards/nominations.  This book is incredible both in prose and illustration, and it shows.  Immediately after reading this, I ran to my favorite librarian's desk, slammed this book down, and was like READ THIS IT'S INCREDIBLE.  It gave me chills.  The illustrations are astonishing, the prose was lyrical and fun, and it was just altogether amazing.  And that typeface???  That cover???  Utter perfection.  All of it.  Perfect.

This book was a really fun little read, I didn't realize the significance and culture of barbershops going into it

Poetic and artistic. There's nothing like an awesome fresh haircut to boost one's self-esteem.

Powerful, empowering prose with perfectly painted impressionistic illustrations. The joy and pride that a simple haircut brings the narrator is heartwarming.

3/18/18: Finally got to read it!!!!

6/5/20: I loved this book the first time I read it (um, brilliant writing and illustrations, am I right?!), and now I am so happy to share it with Trent. I loved showing him about this young Black boy's journey at the barbershop and the importance of it in his neighborhood. The conversation following the reading was nice because although Trent found a lot of connections with his barbershop, he had some questions about some differences. And with this one, don't miss the author's note either.
