Very heavy, very dark, and very emotional. Dawn provides an interesting glimpse into the lives of ordinary citizens dealing with unfortunate circumstances. I nearly cried at the end of several of the short stories. The book is gripping, full of content warnings, and has an intriguing political message. It's very nicely written, but definitely not for if you're already feeling bad.

This book is heart-wrenching, emotional, and hard to read at time but it is so worth it. It’s thought provoking and forces you to have a greater awareness of what is happening outside of your life, country, and norms.

Dawn is a collection of short stories about life in Turkey written by Selahattin Demirtaş. From the beginning, this book is incredibly powerful. Demirtaş's letter at the beginning of the book discusses the importance of literature in politics and his short stories demonstrate that reading is in fact a political act. His stories are about Turkish life and oppression. They cover a variety of topics and feature a diverse set of characters--the refugee crisis, Kurdish oppression, political protests, and women's rights.
