I don’t know how to feel. did I cry? yes. did I like it? I guess. did I hate it. absolutely.

I was mostly enjoying the first 3/4 (despite thinking the FMC was annoying) but the last quarter ruined it for me.
Brandon dying pissed me off. I think just as much could have been accomplished by him being hurt and surging too. the whole getting together and pining after each other while dealing with the death seems tacky to me, maybe it happens in real life too, but I hated it. I cried for Sloane, I was more invested in their relationship which DIED than the characters it was supposed to be about. idk if I want to read Sloane find her person in the next book.

I’ve loved other books by this author, but had a hard time with the immaturity of the characters in the beginning. I was also incredibly frustrated by Kristin’s absolute unwillingness to talk to Jacob about her concerns. The twist was incredibly graphic and while I did appreciate how well several difficult subjects were handled I just found myself too often wanting to send all the characters to therapy. It was fine. I’m not upset I read it. But it just wasn’t a hit for me.

It’s funny having read these books out of order and knowing where Kristen and Josh ended up. Even with that knowledge, this book was adorable and heartfelt and sad in the way Abby Jimenez always crafts her stories.

Infertility issues were handled in a one-sided patriarchal way without honest communication or respect for the feelings of others. The conflict was drawn out to the point any sane man would have left and a sad plot twist made the book too long to be enjoyable. I think the caricature of 'evil Mom' was created to explain our heroine's focus on being seen as perfect over being honest. Kristin objectifies and abuses Josh, which isn't resolved in spite of the high page count, and the whole book left me feeling sad.
