While I think this concept had some unique aspects, shrinking it into under 40 pages just felt like a disservice to the whole idea. It quickly dumped a ton of world building that could have been expanded upon to improve visualization and understanding of the rules of the world. I was lost most of the time because those details were so densely packed and were not embedded into the plot, just told to us to give us vague context. Overall was very disappointed in the potential versus the execution.

A short e book with a compelling story. I liked the lead, who was realistic and original. I did get confused when it came to the whole magic thing. But overall, I enjoyed it.

Five star story, but a four star review: ok I get that this was published awhile ago, and while the story holds up mostly (truely I loved it), a white author writing about an Indigenous protagonist in a story steeped in race and history and belief doesn't necessarily hold up in 2023. Sure, it's set in a parallel universe and it's a fantasy short story - again the story is great - but, well, the author sort of addresses that here: https://writtenworld.substack.com/p/the-written-world-of-whiteness.

Just a caution to think critically and request to seek our Indigenous writers also, not a cancel.
