I'm definitely not the target audience for this as someone first reading it in my 30's LOL but I chose to read it to fulfill challenge prompts, and I'm glad I did! it's a very quick read, and packed with action. definitely something I would have been really drawn into as a middle-grader, and reading it as an adult made me feel nostalgic for the things I did actually read at the time (ex Goosebumps, Animorphs, etc). I wasn't expecting
cosmic horror,
but it was done in a really interesting way that seemed age appropriate.

my biggest issue is that as an adult stories where children are tasked with quests beyond their comprehension make me really angry. I definitely needed these kinds of stories growing up, especially as someone who was very adult-ified before my time, but in hindsight I also would have benefitted from more narratives where children dealt with very difficult things (ex grief) without needing to have the entirety of the world resting on their shoulders. it feels like a manipulative trope generally, and
the amulet being so cloying
really exemplified that manipulation for me.

if I ever need to read middle grade or graphic novels for a challenge in the future I'll probably read further into the series!

really enjoyed the art style! It was an engaging read. I love the characters and it was quick. The story was a bit hard to follow at times but very cool.

Amulet with its cast of loveable but flawed protagonists weaves a story that is both whimsical and hard hitting to read about the perils of superpowers and leadership. — Full Review on thebackcatalogue.substack.com

Adorable, but exciting. Even for someone not in the targeted age group.

Third Read-through: January 2024
It’s finally time to re-read this wonderful graphic novel series, now that the final volume (#9) is coming out!!

~~~~~
I can’t believe it’s been over 15 years since this first volume was published! Also, the fact that this series was my initial foray into graphic novels is crazy to think about too, particularly as it’s remained one of my favourites that I’ve ever read.
Having said that, I am being a bit more critical this read-through and have, therefore, lowered my star rating for this first volume. The art style bothered me in places (particularly with how Silas and the Elf Prince were drawn) and I feel as though the writing could be a bit better as well. I’m still really invested in the characters though, and I absolutely love the world (Alledia) and overall plot.
But yes, I’m very happy to finally be reading this series again and I’m hoping my enjoyment and excitement levels will remain high throughout the entire read-through! *crosses fingers*
Second Read-through: May 2018
Gah! I've missed this series SO much! Love the artwork, love the story, LOVE the characters and world!!
It's actually been so long since I first read this series though that I've forgotten a lot of what happens, so I'm eager to read through it once again and jog my memory. ;3 Plus I still haven't read the latest volume (#7), so I have that to look forward to as well! :D
First Read-through: June 2014
I bought this on a whim, after deciding I wanted to start reading graphic novels, and ended up reading it pretty much immediately. (I also basically read it in one sitting.) It's a fairly fast-paced read, but I think the pacing is quite well done for the length of it. The artwork is very pretty, and the writing is quite funny and cute at times. I love every single one of the characters (particularly Biskit and Silas' other robots!) and I definitely want to see what happens to them next.
I'm already quite invested in this story actually, even with this first volume only really giving me a taste of what is to come (at least that's what I hope is the case). I enjoyed the story so much, in fact, that I went out and bought the rest of the volumes that are currently out (#2-5) before I even finished reading this first volume. I'm definitely excited to jump right into the next one, and this has certainly made a good first impression on me with respect to graphic novels, in general. I'll definitely be checking out some other ones after I finish this series. ^_^
