This was an exquisite book. Readable, carefully researched, and beautifully conceived, Nature’s Metropolis inspired me to look at the world and my favorite city/region in a whole new way.

Very informative, but also dense. I can see why this is a foundational text, but I probably won't want to read this in its entirety again.

This is one of those books you won't mind being assigned to you in a course.

Cronon does an excellent job of maintaining an engaging narrative of development and innovation over a vast timespan and in a tightly focused area. It is these deep dives into the history of places - whether they be economic, politically, or socially significant focused - that make reading about history as enjoyable as it is educational.

While this text was indeed required for a class (and I read it as one reads a required text), it was certainly interesting and accessible enough to warrant reading for leisure.
