This is an intricate tale of a poor, "ignorant" servant whose death and dying wishes have eveyone in her small Sicilian town talking. Slow start, but I was eventually completely captivated by the intrigue. Very Italian story.

I didn't understand what Dr.mendico and Father Arena had a conversation about at last. And what Dr.mendico said " yes" to.
I would like to read it again. And there are too many characters to keep track of specially with the foriegn names. So reading it again would help me understand it more and make connections between the characters.

Ho fatto abbastanza fatica ad entrare nel ritmo del romanzo e ad affezionarmi ai personaggi. In parte perchè, praticamente per la prima metà del libro, la quantità di personaggi introdotta è continua. Ad ogni capitolo spunta qualcuno di nuovo, ma molti di questi personaggi fanno parte del tipico pettegolezzo allargato di paese (soprattutto negli anni in cui si svolge il romanzo), ma non hanno un ruolo chiave o preponderante ai fini del romanzo.
La storia è abbastanza triste: una famiglia sfasciata da generazioni, che per le ultime due si regge solo sulla ipotetica capacità della donna di servizio di tenere i conti e far fiorire il capitale di famiglia, e contemporaneamente far mantenere i rapporti - se non di affetto quantomeno di educazione - tra i fratelli (sempre attraverso il denaro).
Il mistero che pian piano (molto piano, francamente di una lentezza esasperante in certi punti) è un mix di improbabilità ed prevedibilità.

Che la Mennulara fosse amante di Orazio lo aveva capito anche il muro, così come il fatto che i vasi originali fossero quelli trovati in un secondo tempo

Lo stratagemma per associare la Mennulara a Don Vincenzo Ancona mi è sembrato banale, così come il suo epilogo. Troppo semplice se poi si vuole associare Don Vincenzo alla mafia.

Addirittura pare che si voglia far passare Don Vincenzo come una brava persona. Che cosa ridicola

C'è un ricorso quasi patologico alla violenza.
Tra le recensioni che lo accompagnano, ne spicca una che parla di divertimento. Non c'è nulla di cui ridere, francamente.
Deludente.

I enjoyed this book and found it really interesting. I would actually give it 3.5 stars if that was possible. My problem with the book was that it was confusing - so many italian names and a few chapters that felt unnecessary. I didn't love the end of the book because I still felt somewhat confused and felt there were a few loose ends. Having said this, I really did enjoy reading this book.
