I was given an ARC of this book from a bookstore owner. I have had it for a long time and wished I would have read it sooner. Crow Mary is a beautiful historical fiction novel based on the life of a real Crow Indian/Native American. This story opens up the readers eyes to the past and gives educational value by learning bits of history. I've always wondered how daily life on a reservation unfolds and the importance of their tribal laws and religion. To become a better person, we must first understand each other, and this book is an eye into the past that helps one do just that. The tribes had to sacrifice a lot to obtain supplies from the white tradesman and sometimes that included their daughters. Crow Mary had an arranged marriage with a trader at the age of 16/17 snows. She had to learn to love an older man she did not know. Crow Mary shows the life struggles of the past on and off the reservation. There is murder and mayhem, as well as alcohol addiction. I felt true pain and sorrow for the tribes whose children were taken away and forced to forget their language, culture, religion, etc. Not only did they lose their children, but they also lost their land to the government. I personally have family members that are Indian/Native American, some who have lived on a reservation. I love to learn about the history and culture to better understand our blended family.
