Creepy characters, particularly Lucy. Seemingly charming and yet I would be quite terrified to be cooped up in a large country home with any of them. I wish Hurcule Poirot was more involved. Fooled by the ending.

This may be my lowest ranking Hercule Poirot mystery only because I didn’t like how they glorified John. But maybe Miss Agatha Christie really has that “kill men” energy because John was murdered and everyone else tried to help cover it up. The characters really just went and said “it’s what she deserves” referring to John’s murder. I like how diverse all women are here and that the men are almost just plot devices to move the mystery forward but I also really disliked how these women’s lives revolved around compromising for men. It is the most drawn-from-reality comparison and I hate it.
So while this book really makes you think about the position, motives, interests of women in the wife, the mistress, the relatives, the family — I feel as though it has also done a disservice to them. Are we, then, going to just accept that these women’s lives revolve around men AS IN Henrietta’s being empty thereafter (not that you could scorn anyone at all for mourning the death of their lover); and Midge deciding to settle with Edward to be the change he needs? I now realize how complex these women are and maybe at this point of my rambling I’m coming to realize that maybe this particular installment didn’t sit well with me because I didn’t like John at all. He reminds me of the very many disgusting men I have cross paths with in my life and still were thought of as great.
3 stars because nothing can make me feel better from the disgust I felt towards John but overall a very well-written mystery novel. Also, Poirot was rarely present through most of this book, have you noticed?

I didn't really like most of the characters in this book, and the personal relationships were a bit dark in various ways.
But of course the misdirection and plotting were excellent. In fact, I was just positive that Agatha was clumsily sign-posting that a certain person was the culprit, and I was prepared to be disappointed by how easy it was to figure it out.
I should have known better. :)

This was a very good Agatha Christie novel. While it had less Poirot than I normally like to have in the story, I really felt like I got to know all of our characters and I was rooting for them!
