There are books in the school curriculum that you just read because you are assigned to. And so was this book. I did not like it all that much. I could not relate to the main character or any of them and it was all so - bleak somehow, sad, pathetic. It seemed just a part of the general Soviet agenda, like we read it just to see how bad life used to be. Probably, if I read it as a grown up, I'd have a different opinion. But I never came back to that book and I don't think I will somehow ever will. Goodreads showed it to me as a possibility to read so I am leaving this review. I cannot possibly imagine any reason for anybody to read the English translation.
