This is a beautiful story that celebrates overcoming language barriers and learning from both elders and youth.  Not only that, but how the combination of the two and their experiences helps the others to understand each other and create a new bond and friendship between the two.  Both the grandfather and the young boy love to draw, though their styles vary greatly.  But when put together, they create something totally new and totally inspiring in a way neither of them could have imagined.  It's emotional, sweet, and overall a force to be reckoned with.  Great for grades 1-3.

So moving! I loved this story about a grandparent and grandchild who learn to communicate across a language barrier through art.

This gorgeous book took my breath away. Actually. I read it at ALA Annual, and when I finished, I looked around to find someone to just feel with because the emotions were overflowing within me! The celebration of art and family and the feeling of being stuck between two worlds and not being to connect with a family member were all things that just touched me. It is a book that I had to own, I now will buy for so many people, and I cannot wait to share with my students and my son.

One of my secrets is I love reading children’s books- this one especially- it is light on words, which I found great for interactive kid reading- ei kids who are really into asking questions about images or making up elaborations on the story based on what they see. This worked great for some kindergarteners I know- but I’m curious to see in the reviews what age ranges did and didn’t respond to this one.

This book highlights the struggle when you and a loved one are experiencing a language barrier but also find a way to connect and show your love and care for one another. It also shows a glimpse of cultural art and how it can differ from generation to generation.
