Dovey Mae and her grandmother set out in the early morning to pick berries. As the day grows slightly lighter, the two stand side by side, watching the sun rise and the day dawn.

A beautifully illustrated biography of Dovey Mae, encapsulating a strong memory of her and her grandmother.

This was an amazing tale from an amazing woman. Dovey Johnson Roundtree is an astounding woman. (Even though she is gone from this world, she's still here in all her glory and greatness). She did so much throughout her life and was stronger than one can imagine. Having read this short sweet story and reading the miniature biography in the back of this book I am ready to read her full biography and know even more the wonder that is Dovey Roundtree.

Gentle, whispery, atmospheric. So much love in this vignette from the life of a civil rights leader. The back matter added value and context to the story. Highly recommend.

A beautiful story with equally beautiful illustrations. I love the relationship Dovey Mae has with her grandmother and the special moment that she cherishes, and shares with the reader, that marked the importance of the relationship she had with her grandmother.

The heartfelt story of this child and her grandmother is magnificently woven through the book’s moving art, which at every page illuminates the magic of the dark forest and rising dawn. Followed by a brief biography of its main character, this book sheds light on a vital piece of American history, Black or otherwise. It is quick, beautiful, and fun! A wonderful introduction to this era of history.

I love the illustrations and the prose, as well as the biographical information in the back about Roundtree (who I had never heard of before--I immediately added her autobiography to my TBR).

Any book that makes you cry surprise tears should tell you everything you need to, because I certainly wasn't expecting it. It was a lovely story, and the artwork elevated it all to another level of beauty.

A simple tale on the surface but filled with love. Some of the most beautiful illustrations I've seen.
