Hysterical is much more than a memoir. Elissa Bassist uses her experiences as a springboard to comment on and educate readers about the bullshit that women all over the world must go through. She comes with dozens of statistics and plenty of research to back herself up, to show that women everywhere are ill, are discredited, are assaulted, are silenced, are ridiculed for being all of the above, and so on.
For women, Hysterical will likely make you sad at points, reminding us of our own experiences and feelings, knowing that such is our lot. But it also invigorates, both by angering and bolstering. For others, Hysterical is a must-read in order to learn in one place an abridged, but powerful, account of what it's like to be a woman.
