Things continue falling apart, this time for Okonkwo's grandchild, Obi. I am not giving anything away here, as the novel starts off with the bad news for him. Even so, the writing is very engaging (and quite different from [b:Things Fall Apart|37781|Things Fall Apart (The African Trilogy, #1)|Chinua Achebe|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1352082529s/37781.jpg|825843]), and it is with trepidation, dread and dismay that I followed Obi's slow but relentless slide into catastrophe in mid '50s Nigeria. But as in [b:Things Fall Apart|37781|Things Fall Apart (The African Trilogy, #1)|Chinua Achebe|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1352082529s/37781.jpg|825843]) here too the story is a pretext to continue the dissection of two great themes - the tension between the individual and his kinship, and thate between the white coloniser and the colonised.
Achebe's writing is, however, different - Obi is a "man of the book" and the writing is richer and more elegant than for Okonkwo's story, though the inability to cope with the unplanned and unexpected is the same.
Excellent.

Not as banger of a book as things fall apart but how do even beat that book! Still an entertaining sequel.

Whilst disappointing compared to Things Fall Apart, it was an interesting view into the steady erosion of Nigerian society after the horrific effects of colonialism. However, the plot and characters made it a hard read and it felt lost compared to Things Fall Apart. An ok read, but not a strong book.
