The epitome of "okay." It's not that this is worse than the first book; it's perfectly competent. In fact, I assumed we were going to get Bujold Hogwarts, and I'm pleased that she chose to skip that particular trope.

I thought the first book was thin but maybe setting up some really good stories. But the second has no more luster than the first. It's adequate, but life's too short to read adequate books.

This felt chatter-y and didn't expand on what I wanted from the first book. Took me ridiculously long to finish for a novella, just couldn't hold my attention. I'll try one more, but maybe only the first book will catch me

12/2019 update: I finally got my SO to start reading the first of these as I picked up the seventh, but I was so put out at not remembering the context for the bits he was laughing at that I ended up joining him for the 2nd through the 6th. A great way to spend a chilly week in November.

These novellas don't have the same kind of resonance as Paladin of Souls (my favorite of hers) but you can tell she had fun writing them and I'm having a great time devouring them.

I enjoy the subtle humor of these stories, the character of Pen and his demon, Desdemona "Des". They make a great match and these are interesting stories if a bit heavy. The world and 5 gods and all the accompanying minutiae is a bit much for the casual SF reader but I love the dynamic happening between Pen and pretty much anyone her comes in contact with.

This story comes in 4 years after the previous one and we see how Pen has matured and is easy with Des. It is based on shaman magic and beast building- I don't know- all this is above my pay grade but I like it!

Looking forward to more Inglis and Oswyl as reluctant groupies of Pen :)
