It’s pretty good for a superhero story. I don’t know. I don’t really read superhero comics anymore or have much interest in doing so, so I don’t know how much of this is a me problem. The art is gorgeous and some of the spectacle is exciting. But it feels like some of the thorny political context Stormwatch was at least trying to take on, if not succeeding, has pretty much disappeared in favour of the big sweeping action story. It presents an irritatingly uncomplicated vision of the world where are problems genuinely can be solved by incredibly overpowered heroes beating shit up and being borderline fascistic in their exercise of authority (even if it’s for the “right” reasons). I know Ellis often seems critical of authority in his other work, and perhaps there’s some criticism here I’m not seeing, but it just seems pretty simplistic and devoid of nuance.

A really fresh new take on what it means to be a superhero. No longer willing to obey nationalism over morals, The Authority sets out to right the wrongs of the world.

A quick read, and a generally satisfying one. The violence that this book is proported to bring seems, 10 years later, tame in comparison to what we see in your average comic book today. And the "wide-screen action" is part and parcel for the scope of modern comic storytelling.
Still, this is what reinvented the genre. And, to be honest, Jenny Sparks is one of the best characters ever.

A total blast of cinematic action and superhero deconstruction. Clever writing, complex characters, amazing drawing. Sometimes too pretentious, but it delivers more action than expected for superheroes with grey morals.

Kinda missed out on these the first time around. I remember sampling the WildStorm thing when Jim Lee was involved right at the beginning, but I soon lost interest so that when these titles and characters were evolving, I wasn't really paying attention. Came to The Authority through Garth Ennis and Kev and found the first two volumes going relatively cheap. This was good enough, I suppose, apart from the weirdly racist villain of the first arc. Refreshingly violent and mildly fascist in a way that I guess was meant satirically but which may have flown over people's heads. I can't say this was essential, but it was fun.

A good book.
I'm interested in reading more.
Explores an idea originally (I think) done in a Justice League story arc (Or at least I read that first).
