Uhh... something about the importance of memory and having a past. And magical hookers.

If you've ever wondered what a mash up of Fannie Hill, The Stand, and The Giver set in Canada would be like, this is the book for you. It was okay, but would have benefited from better editing. I wanted it to be better than it was. There were sections of exposition that did nothing for the plot, and character development was somewhat lacking.

Between 2.5 and 3 stars. I get what it was trying to do (I think? lol) but it didn't quite do it for me. Not upset I read it tho because some of it was touching.

There were some thing that had me intrigued in this book. In particular, I really enjoyed the section in The Dark and the interactions between Little and the Glories from the other houses. But nearly halfway through, and I just wasn't sure where the story wasa going. I needed a little more conflict than just vague mysteries.

Not the book I should have chosen to read between classes, I was hoping it would bolster my knowledge of sexuality and gender while inspiring creative thinking - yes I plan out my books to best benefit my current courses and goals, no shame.
I read Amber Dawn's autobiography first, I follow her activism and events and think she's generally a woman I want to know and think her voice is an important one in modern politics. Unfortunately for me this work was a disappointment, it's her first piece of writing and her auto (which is most current) was better written so I know she improves in style and skill. The plot had holes, characters were inconsistent and unbelievable, I feel like there was so much to work with and this selfish reader wanted more! More about the monsters in the dark (the stone beetles were neat, what else is there!>), more about the history of Sub Rosa, more about what happened to lost characters: the Widower (and his wife, what's that about), Arsen's past, The mechanic living in the dark (and if anyone else lived there, how and why). The list of cons goes on, for now I haven't given up on Amber Dawn and will explore another of her fantasies, though first I'll take a break for something more focused on the classes this semester.

*Dives back into non-fiction sexual psychology section* Science is sexy.

So strange and oddly absorbing. So much world building for a world adjacent to our own

Amazing. Really, that's the best 'review' I can provide. Not like anything I've read in a long, long time. And really well-written.
