I read this at Pre-school story time today and it was a huge hit! It's one of those great picture books that breaks through the fourth wall (also called metafiction) and talks to you as a reader and makes you do things in the book.

You are introduced to three cats who think this story is about them until one of them smells something... they smell a dog! Being cats they are scared of dogs and think they are scary, hairy things! Throughout the book they hide in different places and whisper not to open the door, lid, whatever but of course the kids are screaming 'Open it!!' and hilarity ensues.

Eventually the cats realise the dog isn't all that bad and tell the reader to pat their dog. Spoiler Alert: there IS a dog in this book.

Great interactive book, which encourages befriending the different and seeing past stereotypes. Also of being gentle.

So crazy-stinkin' fun! This one begs to be read aloud in three different silly voices for each of the cats. Lift-the-flaps and "pet the dog gently" fun make this best for small groups or one-on-one. Love!

I'm generally not a fan of interactive flaps in a picture book, but not only do they work in this book, they are also funny and engaging.

There were clever lift the flaps in this one, with a very satisfying ending. The speech bubbles over the dog were priceless - the author clearly thinks cats are more intelligent than dogs, but not in a malicious way.

For me, the curious little red cat is the best part of this book. Maybe because I identify with his need to say hi and pet any dog that I see. Kids should get a kick out of the cats' reactions to the new furry friend in their house, and the flaps and pop-ups add another great layer of fun.
