Yes yes yes! Think I've found a comic for the favourites shelf and cosplay inspiration for comic con next year. Kick ass, no barrels and zero forks.

Consider this a review for #1-#7 of this series, as that's what I've read so far, and I LOVE. I LOVE THIS SERIES.

Quick background on me: I hate comics. I hate having visuals forced on me. I like to let my imagination do the work, and comics always made me defiant. I wanted the words to speak for themselves. So, when my best friend told me I needed to read Rat Queens because I would absolutely love it, I scoffed. I rolled my eyes. I put it off for months. But he wouldn't let up and he kept pushing me, so I finally gave in and read this volume.

Now, while I still won't read comics in general, Rat Queens is a complete and total exception. I ate my words, and crow, and my foot, etc. This book is awesome. The characters are great, and the dialogue is snappy, witty, and realistic. I really just can't say enough good things about this series.

My only complaint is
Spoilerthe death of Obsidian Darkness. In the very few panels they had, they stole all of my love. I was hoping for more from them because they had potential to be hysterical, but alas.

Rat Queens Vol.1 was a very pleasant surprise. I was expecting cheesy writing, stereotypical mega-femme characters with poor background development, and little to no emotional investment. Instead, I was met with a compilation of genuinely funny dialogue, and relatable characters that I was left dying to read more about. The end of the first volume was very enticing, and had me ordering the next installment before even re-shelving the first. Definitely a great foundation for what I anticipate will be an excellent series.

I think this is a funny series with a lot of potential, but this first volume felt like a very detailed inside joke for people who enjoy D&D and RPGs. For a series that is unusual in a lot of respects -- there are four female main characters who run around killing monsters -- it still seemed like I was reading the comic version of a videogame storyline.

I’ve been meaning to start this series for a while after seeing it on a lot of people’s TBR’s or currently readings. After reading this first issue I have the feeling this series is going to be the same for me as SAGA. That is, I’ll enjoy it on the surface level as a palate cleanser between books or when I’m bored, the art work is fine, the storyline is ok if a bit confusing and graphic, but it’s no 5* read for me. But then not everything you read has to be a 5* read. That too would get boring fast.

More of a 4.5 really, but I'll bump it up because it's tough to intro four main characters in a balanced way and because the dialogue was hilarious. I cannot wait to read the further exploits of these four kickass women.

If Quentin Tarantino were a feminist... 4 stars because I already got the next one from the library.

I liked the plot, I liked that the characters felt like familiar people while still feeling fresh. It's kind of over the top for me in the amount of blood but I can tolerate it for a good story and good characters, not to mention some pretty great artwork/storyboarding. I liked it, but there were things that were disappointing to me...

I know this book was praised for no spandex, but two of the characters wear corsets. I realize that's big in cosplay and comiccon world, but are corsets really better than spandex?

Disappointed that the one main character who is a person of color did not feel as thoroughly fleshed out as the other characters. It did end on a bit of a cliffhanger for her, so there's hope.

*SPOILER ALERT*

Also, I don't care how good your healing power is, you can't heal someone who's had a broad sword go through the middle of her neck. Inserted horizontally, how would the blade fail to sever her spinal cord or brain stem, not mention cut off her airway.
