A wonderful, heartwrenching and powerful story that made me hate and love the world we live in equally.
It gives an insight to the history of Afghanistan from 1970 to 2003 from the perspectives of different sides through the eyes of socially and culturally different characters on a deeply human level while telling the story of the friendship two amazingly strong women who live in a mostly forced marriage with an abusive husband.
The multitude of layers this book has while still being written in a very simple and direct style (at least in the german translation) just amazes me. As I was after reading Kite Runner, I am in awe of this book.

Outstanding writer. Ploughed through both books in a matter of days. Both are a brutal revelation of what us westerners have no clue about, the everyday violence and despair in everyday lives. Hosseini's characters will stay with you and you will be drawn back to them way after the last page.

One of those books to be read in bits and pieces to truly absorb everything it contains. A beautifully written book.
