An enjoyable and very quick read! I preferred elder race's approach to the premise that what is sci fi to one is fantasy to another in the same story, and the worldbuilding and characters here just a little bit weaker to my mind, but you can't complain about a book this short! The problem with books in this genre is that I the reader already know what is to the characters quite an impactful reveal, so it doesn't hit as hard as it otherwise might.

Fantasy world that is actually a future world where humans bioengineered themselves to survive on a hostile planet and "ghosts" take over people's bodies in various communities to turn them into subject matter experts (lawmakers, doctors, probably something else) and if you get exiled it excises your implants or whatever and you can't eat anything and you die. The MC gets accidentally exiled and sets off to find a life where you don't need implants to live. Seems unlikely! And also like a bad idea! That's where the book ends, though!

Fascinating exploration of community, history, what is forgotten and remembered over time, how the priorities of our ancestors shape our present, and how powerful ideology can be. It packs quite a lot into a small space, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. This was my first Adrien Tchaikovsky book, but it definitely will not be my last!
