Very knowledgeable but he should have edited it down to the 350 pages.

A very enjoyable read focusing on the change of tactics through 25 years of the Premier League. Very interesting and a joy to relive some forgotten memories and watch clips online of goal, games and players long forgotten.
A great read for fans of English football, tactics and sports in general.

Thoughtfully written, with a style that lends itself well to opening up what has potential to be dry subject matter. Several insightful analyses explain most of the tactical evolution of the Premier League, only thing missing is an explanation of how Tactics Tim left Tottenham with the highest win % of any Spurs manager in Prem history.

Very thorough and very good. In terms of the premier league it is heavily weighted towards analysing Manchester United. Shouldnt be a complete suprise as there have been periods they have dominated. The author finds most of what they did to be excellent and can be too grudging towards the many times they were completely outplayed but still scrambled a win. Or when they are beaten by opposition he talks only of uniteds failures rather than the oppositions good play. No mention too of how indebted they were to psychology. Group harrassment of referees or when Ferguson or Mike Phelan were screaming verbal abuse about decisions they werent trying to get that decision reversed but were influencing the mind of officials for the next tight decision.
Also strange how some sides merit little attention. Leeds in the early 2000 were an exciting, creative and good team to watch but they only merit 3 pages despite the fact they must have been doing something right. Also the Cantona tale is reported wrongly. When he saw Howard Wilkinson and asked for a transfer the manager had his measure and knew he wanted one of the premier leagues favourite clubs so offered to phone man utd liverpool or arsenal to blunt cantonas supposed desire
