A very quiet but cute little book. It's sort of a slow story, but it's not very long so it doesn't get super boring. You just watch the characters grow and change over time, and it made me think about myself and my life. Plus, there is a little twist at the end that made it more interesting for me.

I picked this one up because I enjoyed Steve Martin's breezy, succinct prose in "The Pleasure of my Company." The same sort of writing is present here, but I found the characters irritating--bland, cute, needy, light and transparent as air. Everything felt too clean and neat, and for all the time Martin spends trying to make us like Mirabelle, I found myself tolerant of her waify, wimpy, nymphiness at best. I stopped reading a few chapters in.

Growing up in love is the prevailing theme in this Steve Martin novella.  The two protagonists reach an unexpected resolution in this uplifting, well-told story.

The story could have been good if it were written by a woman. Instead, I just think Steve Martin has never met a real woman.
