A magical journey through the Llanos of New Mexico seen through the eyes of young Antonio and his older friend Ultima. The syntax and word choice used in this book paint every scene full of wind sweep color and the gentle majesty of the landscape and flesh out the memorable characters we meet along the way.
The debate between Catholicism and pagan religion that gradually morphs into a question of culture and identity really fueled my passion for this book and kept me turning page after page as the story continued.
The ending was absolutely perfect for the book as well, it wrapped things up just enough while leaving a sensible amount of ambiguity. One of the best novels I’ve read in a long while.

I loved the chicano wisdom, la curandera y la brujaria, the traumas of the school children... especially the nativity play... this book is wonderful. I hope that one day I will see the Golden Carp.

I absolutely loved this book as a kid. It helped me survive the summer that my grandmother died. It was also the only summer that saw me finish my English homework long before school started again.

Boring, slow, didn’t get any of the “coming of age”, really vague spiritualism.
