You definitely need to get the audio CD to go with this book. I was a bit skeptical of it, despite seeing that it won the Odyssey Award, given by the American Library Association for best audiobook of the year. Such a short book to win the award, which normally went to 12-hour plus books.

But this very much deserved the award. Now, I give the book 4 stars because the PHYSICAL book is a bit underwhelming, and if all you get is the pages, it's a book I would pass on. But the AUDIOBOOK is great. It's got light background music, liberal sound effects, and an enthusiastic reader. It's all balanced well, so none of those sound effects distract, but instead build up the world. Honestly, I'd say it's better for you to play the CD for your kids than to read the book aloud because, in the end, the CD will do a far, far better job.

Again, the book itself? It's meh. Nothing bad to say about it, but just forgettable. I'm sure chicken-loving kids would adore this, but with the audio CD, EVERY child will demand to hear the story over and over again.

I can't believe I missed this Kate DiCamillo book when it first came out. It's wonderful and I love the illustrations by Harry Bliss. A super chicken adventure!

A fun story for young kids. I like that it portrays a chicken not as food, but as a living being with agency and one worthy of adventures. Without being explicitly pro-vegan, I'd add it to a list of animal-rights-friendly children's books.

Louise wanted adventure. So she went on to the sea, joined the circus, and went to an exotic and bustling bazaar. Each time, after her adventure, she longs to go home.

Winner of the Odyssey Award 2010.

Louise longed for adventure. So she left he home and ventured out into the wide world. The pleasures and perils she met proved plentiful: marauding pirates on the majestic seas, a ferocious lion under the bright lights of the big top, a mysterious stranger in an exotic and bustling bazaar. Yet in the face of such daunting danger, our heroine is brave, fearless, feathered, and a chicken.

I had wanted to like this, but neither the narrative nor the illustrations appealed to me. It had promise, but didn't deliver. 2.5 stars rounded down.

Gorgeous artwork, charming story. I love Louise and her adventurous soul. My 5-year-old thought this was pretty good, but I think I enjoyed it more!

Listened to the audio book version on Epic and found it charming and entertaining. Perfect for children aged 5+
