An extremely-well researched overview of many of the falsehoods that reformers and carceralists spread when talking about prisons. Would be an excellent first intro to thinking critically about prisons.

I have to be honest I thought this was gonna be a bit of a depressing and boring read. But the writing is amazing. There are enough factoids, but she connects everything with stories. I also walked away, feeling like I’ve learned a lot, and I have positive tools to move forward. That there is hope. She also has this amazing gift of summarizing a specific issue and where it is rooted. For a couple of those examples look at my saved notes on this book.

An accessible and educational read by Victoria Law. Focusing on the use of language around incarceration systems, Hall focuses on 20 myths of the criminal justice system, varying from immigration detention centres to private prison corporations. Hall provides numerous numerical statistics and touches on multiple theoretical frameworks. As a young person who is interested in pursuing a legal career, I appreciated Hall's work and her thorough explanations.
