In Patagonia by Bruce Chatwin

This hasn't aged well, with colonialist, racist undertones.  I was hoping for reflections about Patagonia - the people, nature, landscape.  Instead it was just pointless musings of a well off traveler visiting other ex-pats.

This was the first book I bought on my Kindle when I switched to a Kindle, I did start it but as with discovering the myriad of cheap books available it was lost amongst the deluge of daily and monthly deals. I discovered the book was available on Audible and had a spare credit so plucked for it and finally have read it via whispersync.

What a superbly enjoyable book it was, some wonderful stories and fantatsic charcaters. It is no surprise why this book is held in such esteem. It does make me yearn to visit a place that has a Welsh interest with the people who relocated many moons ago. Patagonia has always been somewhere I have wished to visit. Perhaps this book has drawn me one step closer.

It is one I am sure to return to many times.

“I climbed a path and from the top looked up-stream towards Chile. I could see the river, glinting and sliding through the bone-white cliffs with strips of emerald cultivation either side. Away from the cliffs was the desert. There was no sound but the wind, whirring through thorns and whistling through dead grass, and no other sign of life but a hawk, and a black beetle easing over white stones.”

A rich Englishman weaves anecdote, academia and adventure to bring the tangled Patagonian frontier to life.

My favourite part of this book was the insight into the people living in this area and the history it has. Sometimes, however, I found the anecdotes too disjointed for me to care.
