Firstly I have to praise the artwork in this. Absolutely stunning. The heavy influence of the Art Deco style gives it such a detailed and fluid aesthetic that I could linger on each drawing for hours.

Next is the storyline. Intricately weaved, gripping and full of mystery, revealing just enough to keep me enraptured. The world building is immense and everything fits and makes sense. It feels like its influenced by the myriad of sci-fi novels that predate it as well as humanities real life preference for dividing itself into factions and using those divisions as justifications for abuse and hatred. Nothing new but nothing dull either. It does remind me a little of Laini Taylor's trilogy.

Lastly are the characters, specifically the protagonist and her relationship with her 2 companions which I immediately linked to Aliens! Maika is Ripley, the Fox girl is Newt and that ginger cat with two tails? Hi Jonesey! Also the adaption of the line "get away from her you bitch" to "ill eat you bitch" - truly delectable.

An interesting thing to note - there are hardly any men in this world and only 2 of them are in a position of power. It certainly feels that this is a world taken over by women - the exclusively female group the Cumaean control the human society, the ancients are mainly Queens and the Arcanics have two courts, only one we have seen - the Dusk, and that is run by a Baroness. Who run the world? Girls. And this world is at war, filled with greed, torture, no mercy and plenty of murder.

A lot of book reviewers I follow recommended this comic and rated it highly. While I was blown away by the art, I can’t say the same for the story. I appreciate the topics that creators set out to explore at its relates to war and trauma but the plot was not plotting. I felt like I was dumped in the middle of the story with minimal clues to help me figure out what’s going on. The world building and cause of the conflict could be explained better. The dialogue could be better at times. Overall it was still a nice read (thanks to the art) but I probably won’t be picking on the next volume.

Ugh, I was really expecting to love this. What a colossal disappointment. In addition to the extreme violence and dark, twisted elements, which I hated, the story just wasn't that good imho. The art and Kippa were the only things that brought this up to a 2 star read for me.

Worth a read for the stunning artwork rather than the satisfactory plot.
