Perfect! I totally related to the character, and it gives great suggestions for telling others, "No," without coming across as rude.

We love us a wise great grandma! A great book with a strong message of personal boundaries AND how to advocate for yourself. Great to start the early conversations about consent with your littles. The illustrations are also beautifully diverse.

I loved that this gave readers some easy-to-follow steps if they are uncomfortable with touch! I also enjoyed the diversity.

Hattie is excited to play horseshoes at her family picnic, but although she loves her family, she hates hugs! So Hattie must find a way to tell her family without hurting their feelings, but how?
The author describes Hattie's emotions in a child-friendly way and gives a practical example of how kids can politely say 'No.' The illustrations have a beautiful soft palette and include a diversity of characters.

This is an important book that tackles the subject of consent in a child-friendly and fun way.

This is a great book that touches on one issue - a kid hating hugs - that can also stand for broader issues concerning any individual's right to establish boundaries, physical or otherwise. I think many kids and adults will relate well to this book - I certainly did, as when I was a kid I certainly didn't like being hugged and kissed by most adults. The story covering Hattie's attendance of a family reunion, and finding a way to stand up for herself to all the many relatives who want to hug her, works very well. I love the great-grandma! The art is very cute and colourful, with very apt characterisation, so you get a sense of who everyone is even if they don't have a big part in the story.
