So true story: I accidentally put the young reader's version of this book on hold at the library and didn't notice until I was 80% finished (also, the day before book club). I should go back and read the adult version, but I'm giving Pakistan a rest.

My rating of this book is in no way meant to diminish or minimize the struggles that Malala (and many girls like her) faces.
Maybe I'm in novel-reading mode and therefore too judgmental of biographical accounts, but I found the information rushed, scrambled, not well-explained. I had a hard-time keeping the vocabulary straight (but that could be on me). The confusion may have disabled captivation.
Malala is courageous, intelligent and admirable. I just didn't care for the book.

As someone else said, the first 3/4 of this book is a slog. It could have been much tighter. I’m glad she shared her story and that I read it, but it isn’t a book I will be keeping.

This is one of the most inspiring and empowering memoirs I’ve read in while. I have learned so much from reading I Am Malala and have become wonderful inspired and grateful for things that many take for granted. It offered up a great perspective and appreciation through Malaga’s story and courage. I highly recommend reading it!

Overall I enjoyed the book. The story was interesting - I enjoyed learning both about how Malala became the advocate she is known to be, but also what her life was like. I liked how the book tied rather seamlessly together "Hero Malala" and "Normal Girl Malala".
I did find the book rather YA, mostly because the narrative voice felt somewhat juvenile. However, I think that also gave book some of its authenticity: Her thoughts really sounded like there were coming from a teenage girl.
There was certain disjointness in the narrative. Of course it was important to give background, but the book jumped quite a bit between global viewpoint, the viewpoint of Malala's dad, and Malala's own view. It was never confusing, but felt a bit jumpy.
I also found her relationship with religion interesting. I don't know about you guys, but if someone came oppressing me in the name of a god, I would find it very easy to turn against the god in question. It was rather impressive how strongly she stayed with her interpretation of the religion. Of course she had people around her who supported her, but still.
