T’ren, the cyborg alien male lead, is shocked to find a decade old human ship in the space his ship is patrolling. He’s even more shocked when his ship’s sentient AI insists that they bring it on board because the human in stasis is his mate. And beyond disbelief when the AI integrates the nearly dead human with another ship that it has been holding since the way with humans ended to save her life.

Vonda, the female human lead, placed herself in stasis because she had no other options. In what she thinks is a dream, she agrees she wants to live and she’s shocked to awaken and find herself in “enemy” hands.

As T’ren and their animal companions explain that humans were the aggressors in the war and that humans have been terraforming planets, Vonda is horrified to realise that she was helping the wrong side. The ship she’s now integrated with is actually focused on protection and, when she finds humans planning to terraform another planet with life, she races to save what she can.

This novella is dual POV, well written and edited, and a great story with so much packed in. I didn’t read this when it was part of an anthology so came to it fresh, though I’ve read others in this world. I enjoyed T’ren’s willingness to work towards a relationship with his soulmate, though he was reluctant to start with. I appreciated Vonda’s shock and her gradual transformation with understanding. I enjoyed the contrast between their sentient bonded companions, with T’ren’s being so pleased that the other had found her companion even as she hated being bound to one of the enemy. I enjoyed their resolution as well.

I received a complimentary copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
