a very mixed bag indeed! nan’s character did a major jump so that she felt changed suddenly from meek to bold, but i guess that’s what heartbreak does sometimes. some things i found maddening to read, but overall, it was enjoyable. it is nice to find such a warm ending for queer women, even if it is largely a fictitious one

I really wanted to like this and just didn’t! I found the protagonist to be grating

As much as I don’t do character-driven stories a bunch, this one had remarkable prose and flow to it. I also enjoyed the wide berth of queer experience it showed and ventured through. Def could have been a little tighter, and also if I had a nickel for every classic book I read with the protag joining socialists outta nowhere at the end, I’d have two nickels which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice.

A complicated read; at times, I was thrilled, unable to put it down, eyes pricking with tears, at others, getting pages read felt like pulling teeth, painful and laborious. But overall, I found the story of Nancy King’s becoming tender, complicated, and engaging. As a protagonist, Nancy infuriated me more than once, but I was left ultimately very satisfied with where the novel finds her at its end.

Is this good wlw representation? I honestly don’t know. I am anxious to read reviews from gay women and hear their thoughts!
