This took me a bit to really get into. The beginning was a little confusing for me and took me a bit to realize who was who. But, after the confusion was figured out, I couldn’t put this book down.

This was the first book I’ve read by Kate Moretti and I plan to buy more! Definitely recommend reading.

Ms Moretti is a gifted author and she does a brilliant job of developing the characters and the story. Her backstory is always so well defined. It’s a 3 only because it just didn’t make me care about anyone in the story. I was only invested to the point of whodunit. The rest just went on and on for a bit too long. And the relationship with the detective kind of creeped me out and I’m not sure it was supposed to.

This was a really excellent crime thriller that had a lot of nuance to it and morally gray characters, making it hard to figure out and realistic and interesting to read. Recommended for those looking for under-the-radar thrillers and mysteries who don't mind characters that aren't "likable."

CW: murder, death, child neglect, infant neglect,

What a corker of a book! I read it in one day. It's just unputdownable!
Engaging, suspensful, well-paced, Kate Moretti wrote a fantastic book. It's a compelling and gripping story.
I loved how well the main character, Edie, is written. Her story, everything that's happening around and to her, pulled me in and held my attention throughout. It's really interesting to read a story told mainly from her point of view, a child of a convicted serial killer, how much actions of her mother impacted on her life, and that of her brother and families of the victims.
In Her Bones is an excellent read and I'm happy to recommend it.

Edie Beckett’s mother was a serial killer. She grew up not knowing that her mother was killing the girlfriends and wives of her lovers. Now Edie is an adult and her mother is in jail, but she can’t stop thinking about the families left behind. She is obsessed with them and knows everything about them.

One day she takes things too far and and gets involved with someone she shouldn’t. When he is found dead, Edie is the prime suspect. She must find out what happened to him, or risk being accused of being just like her mother.

This book had an interesting premise and Edie is a unique character. While I didn’t love some of the twists at the end, overall this is a fast-paced, enjoyable mystery.

What I liked:
-the mixed media - Edie's POV, Brandt's POV, and excerpts from the book.
-Edie on the run.
-the overall "who done it" was well written and fast paced. I was desperate to know who killed Peter, whether Colleen was a victim of Lilith's, and who wrote the book. The story contained three mysteries, all of which were well done and had my interest from start to finish.

What I didn't like:
-the not-so-subtle messaging that some mental illnesses = criminals and being a criminal = mental illness. I think this is a dangerous position and is one that is not rooted in fact.

SUPER enjoyed this book. I love the author's writing style - it feels a lot like how I talk with my friends, so it's familiar, comfortable, and a bit snarky and sarcastic. I liked the overall premise of the book being about those left in the wake of a serial killer - the people who weren't victims or family of a victim, but were deeply affected by the killer's actions all the same.
