The book follows the story of a family during the colonial era in the Hong Kong. The majority of the book is about the founder of the family, Huang Deyun, and her struggles in the colony. It's really more about colonialism in Hong Kong than about the characters themselves. According to the translation note, the book in Chinese was much longer, and a lot of the stuff about the family after the 1940s was cut. That seems like a real shame, the end of the book is a little rushed. But overall it's a very interesting and enjoyable book, especially if you want to learn more about the modern history of Hong Kong.
