Unfortunately a sad disappointment. Thought it would be a perfect read just in time for Halloween, but no. Nothing caught me. Nothing was unpleasant, nothing was scary.

So trick or no treat at all.

There is a solid Halloween urban legend yarn in here BUT it just takes too long to get to it. There was a whole lot of nothing really happening for most of the story. The constant little hints that things were about to get eerie which went nowhere really frustrated me. Jumping between the vast amount of characters made it quite difficult to follow and I was so disconnected by the time anything happened. I did enjoy Road Of Bones so don’t worry Christopher Golden, not writing you off yet!!! I’d recommend this to folks looking to gently transition into something spooky but not too spooky as long as you don’t mind that it’s a very slow build up. Gives you plenty of time to prepare for the scare I guess!

Loved this book! This is the first book I have read by Christopher Golden and I Instantly grabbed 2 more books by him after getting about halfway through.

Gave all the spooky vibes I was looking for while yearning for spooky season. Highly suggest to anyone looking for a good spooky ghost/demon story but don’t expect everyone to get out alive!

The synopsis of this book, particularly the setting being Halloween in the 80s, really drew me in. The atmosphere ended up being pretty disappointing because it failed to deliver all the 80s vibes. It also failed in keeping up the suspense. Every time something spooky happened, the mood was killed by what felt like endless exposition. It took far to long to actually pick up pace and by that point I didn't care anymore.

I wish I had more to say but overall this isn't going to be a memorable one for me.

much thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for an arc in exchange for my thoughts!

There's a premise here that's amazing. There's an attempt at suspense that I want to like. Ultimately, it ends up being very bland. I think the cast is just a little too large. The focus ends up being on their mundane differentlies rather than the horrors of the night.
