Bevins weaves together intimately personal narratives with thoroughly-sourced historical account of the activities of a cadre of federal officials, who - with either the blessings or on orders from the president - orchestrated, set in motion, or otherwise facilitated some of the least-discussed (in the US) atrocities of the 20th century accompanying the rise brutal regimes, all in the name of shadowboxing a nonexistent global communist conspiracy. There is thoughtful analyses, as well, of the lasting effects these tragedies have on our present world and the individual people who were caught in these events.

Deeply unsettling and personal. This book provides a great overall look at US anti-communist actions and the world order shaped by them, yet shares the stories of individuals caught in the middle.
