Overall, this book desperately needs an editor. There are some really interesting 19-ought ideas about marriage, and the very last section of the book is a decent read, but the bulk of it is a long, boring mess. Six hundred pages is far too long for a book with nothing happening. I probably could have read in in far less time if it hadn't kept putting me to sleep.

It's not terrible, but not especially readable (or tolerable). It is moderately interesting to note the similar social attitudes between the time in which the book is set and the 1970s, but to do that sort of thought justice would require re-reading the novel and studying the 1970s, tasks neither of which I am keen to take on in this lifetime. There are also a couple of instances of truly stunning racism, but its really seems to be more character-racism, as opposed to author-racism, so take it for what it is.
